Working from a fascination with the perceived spontaneity that is inherent in photography, much of what I create touches on something more intangible, an intuition, a feeling. Like most photographers, I am drawn to specific lighting or composition or “look”, but these elements are just the foundation for something I find more compelling. I am most interested in documenting quotidian expression. Akin to an anthropologist’s observations in an uncharted cultural landscape, my approach is to consider the nuanced realities of daily life. I set out to record gestures we might all find familiar in their casual articulation. They are “in between” moments, often before or after something has occurred.
